Because of the shape of the Bay of Fundy, the tides are able to reach 28+ feet. This creates strong currents, which, in turn, provides nutrient rich waters that encourages an wealth of marine life. For information on Whirlpool or Beaches click here.

WHIRLPOOL

There is North American's largest whirlpool located between Deer Island Point and Eastport, Maine. It is called the "Old Sow" and has spelled the death for many a ship. The water edges are scattered with old boat wrecks and white lighthouses to protect ongoing vessels. It is best seen 3 hours before high tide at Deer Island Point Park, Eastport, Maine, or on the ferry ride to or from Eastport.

It is in the Western Passage, has currents of more than 6 knots, and tides reaching 28+ feet high. There is much controversy over whether the Old Sow is the largest in the world or the largest in the Western Hemisphere. Between 1817 and 1995, as many as 10 people have lost their lives as a result of the swirls.

After the make of the gasoline engine, there have been far less deaths from the whirlpool. There are still boats being spun from it, but sunken ships are something of a past. However, kayaks and canoes are not advised to sail near the pool.

BEACHES

There are many small, pebbled beaches located around the island. There is a large, private beach located at Sunset Beach Cottage and Suites with the option of sand or pebbles with shells scattered along the whole. There is another sandy beach located at Deer Island Point Park with a close view of the whirlpool. In Cummings Cove is a popular beach with locals and a view of a salmon site. For a view of the Lobster Pounds, Stuart Town and Lambert's Cove beaches are where to be.

There are boat tours, whale watching tours, scuba diving, and also canoe and kayak excursions available in the summertime.

Deer Island had the 1st Salmon Sea-Farm in Atlantic Canada, and, today, there are many Salmon Sites in operation employing numerous amounts of the locals. There are a few lobster pounds including the world's largest located on Deer Island. The island had the 1st Lobster Pound in North America. There is also a sardine cannery and many herring weirs and aquaculture sites scattered along the coast.
